For some reason, in my little tiny notebook, one of the sections has been labeled:
The hardest question in math is: “What is MATH?”
I must have written that in many years ago. But indeed, what is math?
Many people say that Oh, you can’t live without math, you wouldn’t be able to count your fingers, or your money, or tell time, or anything. But I believe that although this is true, there is more to math than just numbers.
Math is not just numbers and counting and geometry and logic. It is more than that. According to the dictionary:
the abstract science of number, quantity, and space. Mathematics may be studied in its own right ( pure mathematics ), or as it is applied to other disciplines such as physics and engineering ( applied mathematics ).
And guess what? The very first Greek root of Math is Manthanein, which means “learn”. A few modifications later, in Latin in means “mathematical art”. See? Math is definitely more than just numbers!
